Importance of obtaining coating for food from agriculture waste from the Valley Ciudad Serdán, Puebla México

The concern of the food industry to obtain or find new alternatives to coat postharvest foods that have greater shelf life, the population’s tendency to have healthy lifestyles and with the awareness of consuming ready to eat food that are minimally processed the alarming figures from FAO regarding food waste due to not being properly preserved, leads to research in which various agricultural waste are analyzed to obtain coating that are biodegradable and prolong the shelf life of the horticultural products. In the Ciudad Serdán, there are different sources of agricultural waste with the potential to be used to make films and / or coatings to be applied to food. This research shows the work carried out with the pulp of castile squash used as an alternative for the elaboration of coatings of fruit and vegetables to prolong their shelf life. One of the results obtained is a coating made from the pulp of castile squash that is discarded by the farmers of the area, in addition to registering a patent application for this procedure whit the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property.
