Abstract

Arroyo Plata is a ramification of dique canal that flows into the Caribbean Sea near Cartagena, discharging pollutants that may influence the quality of water. Environmental data was analyzed using hypothesis testing and confidence intervals and also using multivariate statistical methods including Pearson's correlation and Principal components analysis (PCA). Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), Temperature, Phosphorus and salinity are out of the range recommended for the good health of marine flora and fauna. Four factors were identified as responsible for the data structure, explaining 65,66% of the total variance. The first factor is the physical and nonorganic chemical parameters explaining 20,22% of the total variance. The second and  third factors are, respectively, the microbiological (18%) and physico-chemical (16.2%) and the fourth factor, the agro industrial explains 11,54 %. This study shows that multivariate statistical methods can help the water managers to understand the factors affecting the water quality.
